About the role

We’re looking for a Software Engineering Manager to join our Ascenti Digital team on a permanent, full-time basis. This is a senior, hands-on leadership role at the heart of our digital transformation, responsible for delivering software that powers clinical, operational, and patient-facing services.

You’ll lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers and QA analysts, providing technical direction, coaching, and mentorship while maintaining a strong individual contribution. Working closely with the Chief Technology Officer, you’ll shape the software architecture, own the engineering roadmap, and drive delivery of high-quality, scalable systems across the business.

What you’ll be doing

As a Software Engineering Manager, you’ll:

  • Manage and mentor the Software Engineering team, fostering a high-performing, delivery-focused culture.
  • Own the engineering roadmap and ensure delivery is achievable and aligned to business needs.
  • Lead the design, development, and release of new product features and technical improvements.
  • Partner with the CTO to define and implement our future software architecture.
  • Collaborate with QA to integrate quality assurance and automated testing into workflows.
  • Liaise with stakeholders and product teams to agree milestones and provide clear updates.
  • Champion agile working and data-driven decision-making within engineering.
  • Contribute to innovation and continuous improvement across the digital strategy.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in customer-facing conversations where required.
  • Support wider transformation and technology initiatives across the group.

Qualifications

Knowledge, experience, and qualification

  • Agile processes and methodologies.
  • TypeScript and JavaScript.
  • React or VueJS.
  • C# .NET and ASP.NET.
  • Expert user of relational and nonrelational database technologies.
  • Unit and integration testing.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring and coaching skills with ability to influence others to drive strong performance management.
  • High-quality engagement with internal and external stakeholders, with ability to anticipate their needs and diplomacy to resolve issues.
  • Demonstrable experience of leadership within an agile team.
  • Experience mentoring or managing a team of Software Engineers with a diverse range of skills and specialisms.
  • Expert understanding of modern architectures for developing applications and websites.
  • Highly capable full stack development with experience managing complex systems across the front and back ends.
  • Significant experience with cloud technologies – Azure or AWS.
  • Experience in solving both simple and complex technical issues and taking a solution-based approach to query resolution.
  • Degree in software engineering or equivalent.
  • Proven track record writing code for websites, applications, and services.
