Balfour Beatty VINCI is working with a range of organisations to design and build 90km West Midlands stretch of HS2 - Britain’s new high speed railway. Our work is essential to enable HS2 trains to travel between London and Birmingham as well as continue their journey up to Manchester. It’s an incredibly exciting time to join us - we’re at peak construction with work really ramping up on a broad range of assets including bridges, tunnels and viaducts. Plus you’d join 9,000 people across 72 nationalities working on this exciting section of HS2 across the region.

We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Materials Engineer within the Design Function. This role will be based on site in locations around Lichfield The northernmost site of the West Midlands stretch of HS2 runs from Water Orton to Lichfield. The sites are mainly rural and will link HS2 to the West Coast Mainline track..

Role Responsibilities 

  • Follow, maintaining and audit testing teams inline with safe methods for the activities undertaken
  • Provide technical support sublot 7 and 8, including site wide imported aggregates technical support. Identify and control value engineering (VE) solutions
  • Support BBV delivery teams, providing expert technical support in materials engineering design, assurance and management
  • Develop and maintain relationships with relevant BBV Teams, materials engineering consultants and suppliers/subcontractors, managing their input in the design, development, pricing and delivery of technical solutions on site
  • Provide technical support to BBV for reviewing and monitoring potential or current subcontractors
  • Support and promote materials management initiatives
  • Support the Head of Materials Engineering in materials risk management and carry out an assurance on BBV, identifying best practice, areas for improvement and areas of concern
  • Maintain personal expertise and knowledge to ensure that BBV is at the forefront of the industry both technically and in using the latest technologies and standards

Experienced required

  • Must be degree qualified or have relevant professional experience in either Civil/ Structural/ Materials Engineering and have, or is studying towards a professional qualification (MICE, FGS).
  • Must hold a valid CSCS card. These roles require individuals with strong up to date technical knowledge of materials engineering and industry best practice in all aspects.
  • They will be a technically proficient with a good understanding in other areas in the engineering field and have the professional credibility to engage and inspire others.
  • Understanding of BIM is required.
  • The individual will have an understanding of the principles of framework procurement and experience within the most current forms of procurement and or subcontractor control from a materials technical aspect.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with partners and team members under time pressure.
  • Customer centric in approach, they will have the strategic insight to understand the range of opportunities in invitations and or best practice.
  • The individual will know ‘what good looks like’ and have hands on experience of supporting major project in the technical aspects of materials control.

About Balfour Beatty VINCI

Balfour Beatty VINCI is a long-established joint venture between two powerhouses for the delivery of critical infrastructure across rail, transport and other iconic projects in the UK and beyond. We started working together over 30 years ago to deliver the Channel Tunnel, as members of the TransManche Link consortium. In the Midlands, it is Balfour Beatty VINCI’s role to design and build the route, ready for tracks and signalling to be installed. Our work with HS2 Balfour Beatty VINCI have been awarded a 90km section of the HS2 project from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and then on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Overall, we will be building the following across all our sites:

• 9.3km of viaducts

• 62 overbridges

• 35 cuttings

• 56 culverts

• 62 embankments

• 2 twin bore tunnels and 2 cut and cover tunnels

• 28 underbridges and 11 underpasses
