Balfour Beatty VINCI is working with a range of organisations to design and build 90km West Midlands stretch of HS2 - Britain’s new high speed railway. Our work is essential to enable HS2 trains to travel between London and Birmingham as well as continue their journey up to Manchester. It’s an incredibly exciting time to join us - we’re at peak construction with work really ramping up on a broad range of assets including bridges, tunnels and viaducts. Plus you’d join 9,000 people across 72 nationalities working on this exciting section of HS2 across the region.

We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Health & Safety Manager within the Utilities Team. This role will be based on site in Birmingham.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Maintain all H&S procedures ensuring that the latest versions are provided on Integrated Project Team Area North (IPTAN) way which is a H&S Management system
  • Support the investigation of accidents, incidents and near miss events in accordance with BBV standards to identify and share lessons learned.
  • Review lessons learned from internal and external incident investigations and revise/update procedures, guidance and forms as required
  • Communicate changes and new requirements to management, supervisors and the workforce and support the embedment of these changes as necessary.
  • Undertake Health and Safety compliance evaluations, inspections, and audits at prescribed intervals. Record outputs and liaise with site management to ensure actions are completed.
  • Lead Utilities H&S and support the sublot delivery teams.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through proactive engagement and communications with project teams, including the supply chain
  • Prepare lessons learned and recommendations from incidents & audits and attend best practice and knowledge sharing communities of practice within HS2.
  • Lead, develop and coach employees to build high performing safety team
  • As a center of excellence, you will be providing support as required to the project

Experienced required

  • Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health – CMIOSH Minimum.
  • National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health Construction Certificate / Diploma
  • Full driving licence
  • Accident investigation.
  • Relevant EUSR qualifications

 Knowledge or/experience in:

  • Health and safety legislation, regulations, and guidance.
  • Construction industry experience and in particular Construction Design and Management (CDM)
  • Experience of working on major civil engineering or construction projects.
  • Background in utilities, and a good understanding of the relevant operational training requirements for all operatives and staff in the utility sector
  • Experienced SHEQ professional with a minimum 5-years’ experience of operating in a large contractual area with a proven track record of strategically influencing internal and external stakeholders.
  • Good understanding of the Lloyds Register GIRS, NERS and WIRS certifications and procedures desirable
  • Quality Auditor or a solid understanding
  • Strong communicator
  • Strong analytical and IT skills with the ability to produce plans, spreadsheets, reports, alerts and presentations as necessary

About Balfour Beatty VINCI

Balfour Beatty VINCI is a long-established joint venture between two powerhouses for the delivery of critical infrastructure across rail, transport and other iconic projects in the UK and beyond. We started working together over 30 years ago to deliver the Channel Tunnel, as members of the TransManche Link consortium. In the Midlands, it is Balfour Beatty VINCI’s role to design and build the route, ready for tracks and signalling to be installed. Our work with HS2 Balfour Beatty VINCI have been awarded a 90km section of the HS2 project from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and then on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Overall, we will be building the following across all our sites:

• 9.3km of viaducts

• 62 overbridges

• 35 cuttings

• 56 culverts

• 62 embankments

• 2 twin bore tunnels and 2 cut and cover tunnels

• 28 underbridges and 11 underpasses
