The Role

This role is first and foremost about people. We're looking for someone with the experience, personality and credibility to lead our backend engineering team - not just as a technical authority, but as a genuine culture carrier. Someone who gets as much satisfaction from helping a colleague work through a difficult problem as they do from writing great code themselves.

You'll be joining a skilled and committed team, bringing your experience and leadership to help us raise our standards, strengthen our engineering practices and grow together. This is a hands-on role with real influence over how we build - and one that will evolve with the business, offering increasing scope for the right person. Strong technical credentials matter, but it is your ability to inspire and develop those around you that will define success here.

What You'll Be Doing

• Mentoring and coaching our backend developers through code reviews, pair programming and day-to-day collaboration.
• Defining and embedding engineering standards, tooling and best practices that move our codebase towards enterprise-grade quality.
• Contributing hands-on to our C#/.NET codebase; this is not a purely strategic role, and we want someone who stays close to the code.
• Collaborating with the Head of Technology on technical direction and architectural decisions.
• Working closely with our Technical Product Owner, frontend developers and the wider business within a growing Scrum framework.
• Identifying and addressing technical debt pragmatically, taking the team with you through the process.
• Playing an active role in future hiring decisions as the team grows.

What We're Looking For

We don't expect anyone to tick every box here. If you have the leadership qualities and most of the technical background, we'd love to hear from you.

• Someone who builds trust naturally and leads by example, with real experience shaping or leading a development team.
• The ability to communicate technical thinking clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
• Solid, proven C#/.NET development experience with enough depth for confident, well‑informed technical discussions.
• A genuine interest in clean, well‑crafted code and continuous improvement.
• Strong experience with Azure, RESTful APIs and cloud-based development.

Other Useful Experience

• Azure API Management, Azure Functions, App Services or other PaaS experience.
• SQL Server, MongoDB or Snowflake.
• OAuth 2.0 / OpenID Connect.
• Any background in data platforms, aviation or enterprise SaaS (useful but not essential).
