Job Description

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the role of a Senior Operations Supervisor is to lead and coordinate a team of Operations Supervisors, drivers, and the Traffic Office / Allocations function.

You will act as a key support to the Operations Manager, taking a more strategic role in overseeing daily depot performance, driving operational excellence, and ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality bus services.

You will be responsible for supervising and developing the Operations Supervisor team, ensuring effective management of drivers and operational staff, and maintaining a strong focus on customer experience by proactively managing and resolving service issues.

To ensure a safe, punctual, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of services through strong leadership, performance management, and continuous improvement of operational processes. You will play a lead role in developing a highly skilled and compliant workforce through engagement, coaching, and adherence to operational policies and procedures. Due to the seniority of this role, you will be expected to demonstrate strong leadership, promote a culture of accountability, structure, and discipline, and work collaboratively across departments. You must lead by example, act with professionalism at all times, and foster a respectful and inclusive working environment.

Working Hours 

A flexible approach is essential, you will be required to work any 5 days over 7, completing a mixture of early, middle and late shifts, with a willingness to provide occasional night shift cover to support colleagues and ensure continuity of service during holidays and sickness.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and support a team of Operations Supervisors in the effective management of drivers and daily depot operations.
  • Conduct thorough fact-finding investigations into incidents, complaints, and operational issues, ensuring outcomes are evidence-based, documented, and in line with company policies. 
  •  Oversee return to work interviews and ensure consistency and quality across the supervisory team.
  • Ensure all drivers and operational staff are inducted to a high standard and in line with company procedures. 
  • Take ownership of complex staff welfare, conduct, and performance issues, escalating where appropriate. 
  • Manage direct reports in accordance with company policies, standard operating procedures, and all relevant legislation.
  • Support and deputise for the Operations Manager in delivering agreed operational plans, budgets, and service quality targets.
  • Ensure full compliance with Operator’s Licence undertakings and regulatory requirements. 
  • Lead workforce planning activities to ensure depot staffing meets operational and commercial demands.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with recognised trade union representatives and officials. 
  • Lead initiatives to reduce collisions, staff injuries, and passenger incidents, ensuring robust incident prevention strategies are in place.
  • Monitor, analyse, and drive performance against key performance indicators, including punctuality, reliability, and lost mileage. 
  • Ensure strong cross-functional collaboration between operations, engineering, and commercial teams.
  • Oversee compliance with cash handling procedures and ensure robust financial controls are maintained. 
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and lead implementation of operational efficiencies.
Qualifications
Essential 
  • PCV licence holder.
  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrable experience in a supervisory or senior operational role within the bus or transport industry.
