Senior Engineering Support Solutions Consultant

Job description

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Engineering Consultant to provide expert technical leadership, specialist engineering advice, and through-life engineering support to programmes operating within highly regulated, safety-critical Defence environments.

In this role, you will act as a trusted advisor to MOD, DE&S, prime contractors, and Defence partners. You will deliver advanced engineering guidance, lead technical reviews, support risk evaluation, and contribute to the delivery of safe, available, and sustainable military capability. The role requires a strong blend of technical depth, self-motivation, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to influence engineering outcomes across the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

Technical Delivery

  • Provide specialist engineering advice to MOD, prime contractors, and Defence stakeholders across complex and sensitive programmes.
  • Support the development and delivery of Through-Life Support strategies, including reliability, maintainability, obsolescence management, and configuration control.
  • Ensure engineering decisions underpin safe, sustainable, and cost-effective in-service capability.
  • Provide direction and assurance on engineering methodologies, processes, tools, and leading practices.
  • Produce and review technical documentation, safety cases, and assurance evidence.

Leadership & Mentoring

  • Mentor and support junior consultants, fostering capability development and professional growth within the team.
  • Contribute to recruitment and company events.

Client Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring requirements and objectives are clearly understood and delivered.
  • Represent the organisation at safety reviews, technical working groups, stakeholder forums, and assurance boards.
  • Support business development through the preparation of technical inputs to bids, proposals, and customer presentations.

Governance, Quality & Assurance

  • Ensure all deliverables meet quality standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Support internal assurance activities, audits, and process reviews.
  • Promote a culture of safety, compliance, and professional excellence across all projects.
  • Champion leading practice, continuous improvement, innovation, and knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and improvement of internal engineering standards, processes, and frameworks.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Level 4 qualification in an Engineering discipline (e.g., Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related field).
  • Significant experience working within the UK Defence sector, preferably in the MOD, DE&S, or Defence industry programmes.
  • Strong understanding of Defence engineering standards, regulations, policies, and assurance processes (e.g., RAs, JSPs, DEF STANs, POSMS/POEMS).
  • Proven ability to produce and review technical documentation, safety evidence, and assurance artefacts.

Eligible for UK Security Clearance (SC as a minimum; DV may be required depending on programme).

Desirable

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline (e.g., Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related field).
  • Experience with Through-Life Support, ILS/TLS, obsolescence management, configuration management, and supportability engineering.
  • Knowledge of MOD acquisition frameworks, governance, and approvals processes.
  • Experience working with Front Line Commands, user communities, or operational stakeholders.
