Job description
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Safety Consultants of varying experience levels to provide expert safety leadership, specialist safety engineering advice, and through-life safety support to programmes operating within highly regulated, safety-critical Defence environments.
In this role, you will act as a trusted advisor to MOD, DE&S, prime contractors, and Defence partners. You will deliver advanced safety guidance, lead safety reviews, support hazard analysis, and risk evaluation, and contribute to the delivery of safe, available, and sustainable military capability. The role requires a strong blend of technical experience and understanding, self-motivation, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to influence outcomes across the project lifecycle.
This role is ideal for a highly motivated candidate, able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team as required. As a confident communicator you should be capable of influencing stakeholders at all levels. You will also demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to continuous learning, with a drive to deliver quality outcomes and support the development of others.
Responsibilities
Technical Delivery
- Provide specialist safety advice to MOD, prime contractors, and Defence stakeholders across a wide variety of programmes, including complex and sensitive programmes.
- Support the development and delivery of programmes by providing expert subject matter advice on such matters as FTA, FHA, HAZ ID, Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment, Risks to Life, ALARP, Hazard Management, Safety Case Development etc.
- Ensure safety decisions underpin safe, sustainable, and cost-effective in-service capability.
- Provide direction and assurance on safety methodologies, processes, tools, and leading practices.
- Produce and review technical documentation, safety cases, and assurance evidence.
Leadership & Mentoring
- Mentor and support junior consultants where required, fostering capability development and professional growth within the team.
- Contribute to recruitment and company events as required.
Client Engagement
- Build and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring requirements and objectives are clearly understood and delivered.
- Represent the organisation at safety reviews, working groups, stakeholder forums, assurance boards etc. as required by the customer.
- Support business development through the preparation of technical inputs to bids, proposals, and customer presentations.
Governance, Quality & Assurance
- Ensure all deliverables meet quality standards and regulatory expectations.
- Support internal assurance activities, audits, and process reviews as required.
- Promote a culture of safety, compliance, and professional excellence across all projects.
- Champion leading practice, continuous improvement, innovation, and knowledge sharing within the team.
- Contribute to the development, maintenance, and improvement of internal standards, processes, and frameworks.
Qualifications
- Level 4 qualification in an Engineering discipline (e.g., System Safety, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related field).
Desirable
- Bachelor’s degree in a Safety or Engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
- Training/qualification(s) in specific Safety related discipline(s) (e.g. Fault Tree, Eng Workbench, Bow tie)
- Have, or are working towards IEng professional registration with a recognised body (e.g. IMechE, IET, SaRS).
Competencies
- Strong understanding and experience of the application of safety principles, processes, and techniques
- Proven expertise in system safety engineering such as hazard identification, safety case development, risk management, safety assurance etc.
- Strong understanding of safety legislation, regulation, and standards.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Analytical and pragmatic problem-solving approach, with attention to detail and risk awareness.
- Experience working with Front Line Commands (Air/Land/Maritime), user communities, or operational stakeholders.
- Experience of working the civil air environment.
- Knowledge of related disciplines such as environmental safety, software safety, reliability, human factors, or cyber safety.
- Commercial Awareness: Ability to contribute to bids, tenders, and technical proposals.
Security Requirements:
Holds, or is eligible to hold UK Security Clearance (SC as a minimum; DV may be required depending on programme).
Some projects delivered under this role involve access to information protected by specific UK Government security caveats, including UK Eyes Only material. Access to such information is determined solely by the relevant security authorities and contractual obligations. As a result, eligibility for certain tasks may be restricted to individuals who meet the security vetting requirements applicable to those projects.
Where these restrictions apply, the organisation must follow the formal guidance issued by the UK security authorities, which may limit access for individuals who do not meet the required nationality or clearance conditions. Experience
- Experience delivering Safety projects within high-integrity industries (defence, aerospace, transport, nuclear, or other).
- Experience working within the UK Defence sector, preferably in the MOD, DE&S, or Defence industry programmes.
- Experience working with Front Line Commands (Air/Land/Maritime), user communities, or operational stakeholders.
- Experience of working the civil air environment.
